POPPIES FOR PEONIES

One of our lovely neighbours and friends was cutting back a few of her beautiful poppies after they had taken over the garden. Thankfully for me, she kindly offered them up for pressing and cyanotypes.

I arrived with a trade of my own, fresh peonies cut from the garden in exchange for the most gorgeous armful of poppies. A flower swap feels like the loveliest kind of currency.

Today’s little collection is now ready for next weekend’s sale, and I also created a special print just for her. It’ll be hanging in her hallway as a reminder of the beauty of those blooms. I honestly can’t wait to see it in situ.

IT’S BEEN A DAY

It would have been rude not to make the most of this glorious weather while I’m off work for the week. So naturally, I picked the busiest day possible. Contractors in and out of the house and no electricity for 10 hours. Somehow, I think all that chaos found its way into today’s creative session.

I spent the day focusing on feather prints after a lovely customer request a few weeks ago, with a few florals and grasses sprinkled in too… because I simply couldn’t resist. They’re still my favourite subjects to work with.

Despite the madness of the day, I’m really pleased with how these turned out, and they’ll be added to stock ready for my next sale at The Base 6th June 💙

INSPIRATION

Saw my mum on Saturday for a long overdue catch up. I grabbed a copy of @bwphotomag off the bookshelf and the first page I opened was this article on @mandybarkerphotography.

Inspired by Anna Atkins’ early cyanotypes, Mandy Barker created a series using washed-up synthetic clothing collected from British coastlines to resemble delicate marine algae. The project highlights the hidden environmental impact of fast fashion and microplastic pollution, using the beauty of cyanotype to draw attention to ocean waste.

It felt like one of those perfectly timed moments. Out of all the pages in the magazine, I somehow landed straight on an artist working with cyanotype and environmental storytelling. A small reminder that inspiration often appears when you least expect it, sometimes hidden in a spontaneous coffee date and a randomly opened book 💙

THE BIG REVEAL!

Happy Saturday everyone. The sun is shining, and I thought it was finally time to share this reel after sitting on it for nearly a month.

Over the past few months I’ve been pushing my practice in new directions, moving from smaller works into larger scale cyanotypes. This A1 print was one of my biggest creative goals for the first quarter of the year, and having the space during the Easter break to fully immerse myself in the process made it possible.

I’m incredibly pleased with how this piece came out. The chemistry was on point, the tones developed beautifully, and seeing cyanotype at this scale feels really impactful. Exploring larger work has reminded me how important play and experimentation are within a creative practice, especially when stepping into something unfamiliar.

I’ve also been experimenting with creating reels and videos to document and share my work. Social media feels very different to when I first used it during my wedding photography days, and honestly, learning how to show up online again can feel a little intimidating. But creativity is all about trying, learning, and evolving, and the only real way to improve is to keep doing it.

So here it is, one step further outside my comfort zone and one step further into this new chapter of Wild Cyan & Harris.

Highs and lows come with the territory of market life but today was definitely a high.

What started as a small craft market and boot fair turned into one of my best days to date. I spoke to so many people who were genuinely excited about my work. I had conversations with an artist, ceramicist and a photographer. And came away with some brilliant event recommendations from some lovely visitors, which I will follow up on.

The support, the conversations, the curiosity it all meant a lot. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared kind words, bought a print or followed my page today. It’s given me a real boost.

There’s a lot going on at the moment, and honestly, these markets have been a bit of a breather from all the chaos! Today felt easy in the best and lightest way.

Also, having Josh there, a sunny drive, a few hours outdoors, and bacon sarnies together. Sometimes it’s the simple things that make the best mornings. Thank you for carrying all my stuff in one go from the car!

REST & RESET

The past few days have been a little slower than planned, as I’ve been struggling with a two day migraine attack. It’s been the worst I’ve had in a few years and only just out of bed!

It’s always a strange contrast working with sunlight in my cyanotype process, something that brings me so much joy creatively can feel painful and totally debilitating when a migraine strikes.

The weather has been beautiful, and while I haven’t been able to make the most of it in the way I’d hoped, I’m trying to remind myself that rest is just as important as creating. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is pause, reset, and give ourselves the space to recover, whilst trying not to feel guilty or shaming myself about not having got what I needed to done.

With two stalls coming up next weekend, I’m really looking forward to getting back into the rhythm of making, preparing, and connecting with you all again. For now, it’s about taking things gently and allowing the energy to return 🌿

A really lovely day at Bishop’s Waltham today 🌿

The journey set the tone. All rolling countryside and quiet roads, the kind that makes you slow down a little before the day even begins.

It was so nice meeting new people and chatting about the work. One of my favourite parts is always talking about the process. Many people assume it’s screen print, so seeing their reaction when they realise it’s actually a photographic process never gets old.

Everyone who had a table today was so talented. It really was amazing to see so much lovely work all in one place.

And a little highlight… a surprise visit from Mum and Dad 💙

I’ve been scanning all my recent cyanotypes and starting to pack things away ready for upcoming markets. It’s been a long one, but it always feels good getting everything archived properly.

The larger prints still need photographing, but that’s a job for another day.

I also randomly found a few A2 prints that I must have made ages ago… not entirely sure how something that size disappears in a studio, but here we are.

PRINTS MADE THIS WEEK

What a week! This week has been a busy one in the studio (and garden!). With the Easter holidays giving me a little more time to focus on making, I’ve been taking full advantage of the sunshine and getting outside to print. There’s something really special about working in the fresh air. The warmth of the sun, the slower pace, and watching each print develop naturally in the light.

Over the past week I’ve made just over 200 prints ready for a restock ahead of my upcoming markets. While the number sounds big, the focus hasn’t been on quantity, it’s been about refining the process and continuing to improve the quality of each piece.

I’ve spent time paying closer attention to composition and scale, adjusting and refining my chemistry, and experimenting with different papers and ideas. Each small change helps me learn a little more about the process and how I want the final work to feel.

I’m really looking forward to sharing these new prints at upcoming markets soon. For now, I’m just feeling very grateful for the sunshine, the time to make, and the chance to keep developing this practice.

Yesterday’s stall was such a lovely experience. It was a real pleasure meeting so many wonderful stall holders and having the chance to talk with people throughout the day.

I had some incredibly kind comments about my work which meant a lot, and I’m really grateful for the thoughtful feedback and encouragement from fellow creatives. Hearing how people respond to the work, all the positives and the helpful suggestions are so valuable and something I really appreciate.

One of the highlights of the day was a print being bought by a lovely lady who told me she thought my work was incredible. She’s taking it home to send over to Greece, which feels quite amazing to think about, a little piece of my work travelling that far.

Overall it was a really positive and welcoming experience, and I’m very thankful to have been part of it. Thanks to @willow_and_dusk and @designthatfitzevery1 for making the day all the better. Was a pleasure to meet you both.

I’m already looking forward to the next one. I have a few more fairs booked and will share the upcoming dates very soon.

Planning some new work. The countdown is on for half term and I’m hoping the weather will let up after all the storms we have had. I can’t wait to make some larger pieces in a couple of weeks!

RESET

Lately I’ve been struggling with my cyanotype mix. The last two batches just weren’t doing what they should. It knocked me more than I expected. But after some research, a bit of troubleshooting, and some much-appreciated words of wisdom from generous colleagues at work, I think I’m edging closer to the other side of it.

I wanted to hit the ground running with making, but winter has a way of reminding you to slow down. If there isn’t enough vitamin D in the darker months for our bodies, how can I expect the UV to show up fully for my cyanotypes? It’s made me realise there are plenty of other things I can be doing right now that still support my small business, and that forcing a process rarely works long term.

So it’s back to the drawing board. Fresh chemicals. A bit more patience. And maybe a book by the fire on the first snow day of 2026.

I’m here for the learning curves. This hasn’t stopped me making, it’s just a nudge to be a little kinder to myself and my practice, rather than rushing ahead.

It might be the year of the horse and the urge to power on is strong, but you can’t run before you can walk. My skills haven’t disappeared. The passion is still there. Sometimes taking a minute is what makes things better in the long run.

Tonight’s book of choice: The Creative Wellbeing Handbook by Emmi Salonen. It feels like the right book at the right time.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS 2025

I’ve been meaning to post this for days but technology wasn’t quite on my side.

As 2025 draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the small, meaningful milestones that have shaped this year.

I took part in just four Christmas markets, but each one felt like a step forward. Since the summer, what began as a gentle creative outlet has slowly grown into something really special. Standing behind a table, sharing my cyanotype prints, talking about process, paper, light and time — it still feels a little surreal. 4 markets in 10 days, not bad going for a newbie!

I’m so deeply grateful to everyone who bought a piece of my work. Knowing that something made quietly in my studio has found a home elsewhere means more than I can put into words. Thank you for your curiosity, your conversations, and your kindness.

I’ve also loved connecting with fellow artists and makers along the way — those shared moments of encouragement, advice, and mutual appreciation have been such a gift.

Cyanotype has taught me patience and trust: mixing chemistry, working with light, accepting unpredictability. Naming this practice, giving it space, and letting it grow at its own pace has been part of the journey too.

These markets weren’t about numbers or scale — they were about showing up, sharing what I love, and realising how far I’ve come in a short time. I’m ending this year feeling thankful, encouraged, and quietly excited for what’s next.

I’m so deeply grateful to everyone who bought a piece of my work. Knowing that something made quietly in my studio has found a home elsewhere means more than I can put into words. Thank you for your curiosity, your conversations, and your kindness.

I’ve also loved connecting with fellow artists and makers along the way — those shared moments of encouragement, advice, and mutual appreciation have been such a gift.

Cyanotype has taught me patience and trust: mixing chemistry, working with light, accepting unpredictability. Naming this practice, giving it space, and letting it grow at its own pace has been part of the journey too.

These markets weren’t about numbers or scale — they were about showing up, sharing what I love, and realising how far I’ve come in a short time. I’m ending this year feeling thankful, encouraged, and quietly excited for what’s next.

LETTING IN

I’ve been letting in new creative energy. After the last two markets my feed is suddenly full of amazing local artists, makers, and crafters, and every time I scroll I’m hit with colour, texture, process, and ideas.

Tonight I spent some time in the studio, just playing with macramé knots and trying things with no purpose other than pleasure. No pressure to make it perfect (well maybe a little). Just letting my hands move and reminding myself how good it feels to make for the sake of making.

I’m welcoming all of this in — the inspiration, the curiosity, the messiness, the joy. Creativity doesn’t always have to be serious or productive. Sometimes it’s just following a spark and seeing where it takes you.

A tiny intention for the week ahead: mix up some more cyanotype chemistry and get ready for some larger prints I’ve been dreaming about. I’m all ready for my last two markets.

THE FERN

Lately my fern cyanotypes have been some of the most loved pieces on my stall — and honestly, I can see why. There’s something magical about ferns. They’re prehistoric, older than flowers, older than us by millions of years. Every frond feels like a tiny fossil you can still find alive today.

Cyanotype, the process I use to make these prints, has its own ancient energy too. It’s one of the earliest photographic techniques — no camera, no screens, just sunlight, chemistry, and time. I coat the paper by hand, arrange the pressed ferns, and let the light do the rest. What appears is this deep, velvety blue with the ghostly imprint of something that’s survived since the dinosaurs.

Maybe that’s why these pieces resonate so much: they’re a conversation between two old worlds — the ancient plant and the primitive photograph — meeting for a moment in the present.

What a lovely day at @arcwinch for another Christmas market. It was great to talk to everyone about Cyanotypes and again, met lots of lovely, creative people. I am feeling incredibly lucky to have people buy and share my work. Still doesn’t feel real! I love that my prints have gone to new homes and the love for analogue, photographic processes is strong. 💙

I also got to have a look at the wonderful exhibition by @eileenwhiteart which also features alternative photographic processes. If you get the chance please go and see it. The exhibition is on until the 14th 🩵
